Shaping a market
While demand for cement is increasing due to population growth, rising welfare and urbanization, the emissions created by this hard-to-abate cement sector accounts for around 8% of global CO2 emissions. Addressing this challenge requires collaboration with other sectors - such as the energy sector - and throughout the complete value chain, up until the end consumers.
Successful innovations are happening, like the strategy by Cemvision to eliminate emissions at the source by use of different raw materials, still there are challenges to bring such innovations to market, ranging from higher cost levels and unstable supply of materials to the need for market standards to develop and not the least guarantee of future long term customer demand.
